Lions win district opener

The Granger Lions varsity football team opened district play with a 43-23 win versus the Barlett Bulldogs on Friday, Sept. 27.

Junior running back Caleb Hobratsch led the Lions to victory with an impressive performance rushing for 142 yards and three touchdowns.

Both offenses started the game out hot scoring touchdowns in the first quarter. After that, the Lions scored to make it 14-7 and never looked back, extending its lead on a pair of touchdown passes from junior quarterback Wyatt Rochner to make it 28-7 going into the half. Rochner finished with 92 passing yards and two touchdowns.

The Lion’s offensive dominance would continue in the third quarter as a pair of rushing touchdowns from Hobratsch and Dayton Knippa would put the game away.

Knippa would end the game with 82 rushing yards and one touchdown.

Some other notable players were senior tight end Jett Jolly and junior wide receiver Caleb Tucker both catching touchdown passes from Rochner.

Sophomore defensive end Dreydon Rhea and freshman cornerback Nicholas Bane led Granger on defense as both combined for five tackles with one being for loss.

The Lions improve to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in district play, while Barlett falls to 1-3 overall. Granger will look to build on this win as they host Milano on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
