Hippos battle but fall to Vandergrift in straight sets

The Hutto Hippos volleyball team was defeated in straight sets, 3-0, by the Vandegrift Vipers on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

The Hippos fell to 17-16 overall and 5-3 in district play, while the Vipers improved to 21-13. The match was closer than the final score indicates, as the Hippos fought hard in all three sets but came up just short.

The first two sets were competitive, with Hutto losing 25-20 in the first set and 25-21 in the second. The Vipers finished out the match with a 25-17 win in the third set.

One of the areas Hutto has struggled with this season is returning serves, and that continued as Vandegrift recorded 36 aces. Senior libero Jessie Hoang gave the Hippos the most trouble, notching 11 aces herself.

Some of Hutto’s top performers this season have been senior outside hitter Isabella Orton and senior middle hitter Delijah Bedford. The Hippos will look to bounce back from the loss when they head to Vista Ridge on Tuesday, Oct. 1, before returning home to face Round Rock Westwood. Both matches will begin at 6:30 p.m.
