SUICIDE’S GRIM TOLL:

• Suicide is the second leading cause of death for ages 10-14 and 25-34 in the U.S., and the third leading cause of death for those between the ages of 15 and 24.

• According to the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, there was a 36.7% increase in suicide between 2000 and 2022, equivalent to a suicide death every two hours across the state.

• The greatest increase of any age group statewide — a 69% uptick in mortality rates — was among those 25-29, closely followed by individuals ages 20-24 with an increase of 59.9%.

• Among those in foster care, the rate is more than three times that of all youth in Texas.
