For the second year, a junior at St. Mary’s Catholic High School received an award from the 2024 College Board National Recognition Program.
The National Rural and Small Town Recognition Award went to Leah Altman, educators said. She is a member of the National Honor Society and plays on the St. Mary’s varsity volleyball, basketball and golf teams.
This program awards academic honors to students who take eligible administrations of AP, PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10 exams, maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale and identify as African American or Black, Hispanic or Latino, Indigenous or Native American, or attend high school in a rural area or small town.
In addition to her school activities, Altman is active in the parish, helping as an altar server and a young apostle, mentoring children and teaching in the religious education program.
She dreams of attending Franciscan, U-Mary, Vanderbilt, Baylor or Texas A&M universities, possibly pursuing a degree in neuroscience or neurology to become a doctor.
She is the daughter of Brett and Heidi Zimmerhanzel Altman of Taylor.
