The Hutto Hippos varsity football team (1-1) will host the Cedar Creek Raiders on Friday, Sept. 13.
This game marks Hutto’s first matchup in their new district.
The Hippos are looking to bounce back after a heartbreaking 31-29 loss to the Judson Rockets, with the game decided by a last-second field goal. The Raiders, meanwhile, fell 44-14 to Midway.
The Hippos have been stellar offensively, averaging 46 points per game. Senior wide receiver Braeton Anderson and junior quarterback Kaden Stefek lead the Hutto offense. Anderson recorded 95 yards and a touchdown last week, while Stefek accounted for 271 yards and three touchdowns, as he continues to solidify his role as the starter.
Junior running back Keilan Chavies is another key player for the Hippos, racking up 128 yards and a touchdown against the Rockets.
Senior quarterback Jack Pippen leads the Cedar Creek offense, which averages 14 points per game. His top target is senior wide receiver Reese Brooks.
The Raiders’ defense has struggled this season, giving up 36 points per game. It will be interesting to see the Hippos’ high-scoring offense against Cedar Creek’s vulnerable defense.
Defensively, Hutto is looking to improve after a disappointing performance, giving up 31 points to Judson last week. Junior middle linebacker Brayden Daniel and senior linebacker Cashton Laplante lead the Hippos defense. Daniel has 27 total tackles, five for loss, while Laplante has 22 tackles this year. The Hutto defense should be in a prime position to regain confidence after last week’s performance.
Other players to watch are senior safety Cameron Banks and junior safety Chris Soto. Banks has 17 total tackles this year, while Soto has 18. Both have accounted for an interception.
The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m. at Hutto Memorial Stadium.
