The St. Mary’s varsity football team (0-1) will face a tough road test against the Concordia Cardinals (1-0) on Friday, Sept.
6. St. Mary’s is looking to rebound after a heartbreaking 46-41 loss to Williamson County Homeschool, who scored the gamewinning touchdown in the final minute. The Cardinals, meanwhile, are coming off an impressive 76-30 win over Founders Classic Academy.
The last time these two teams met was in Week 2 of last season when St. Mary’s secured an 81-54 victory in its highestscoring game of 2023.
Head Coach Rick Cobia expects a similar offensive showdown this season but knows his team will need to focus on a “bend-but-don’t-break” defense to secure a win. “They spread the field and like to throw a lot,” Cobia said. “Both teams will put points on the board. The key is keeping their offense in front of us and limiting big plays.”
The St. Mary’s offense is led by senior Ty Zimmerhanzel, a versatile player who accounted for most of the scoring in the season opener. Other key players include senior quarterback Kolbe Barta, senior tight end David Pena and senior Ethan Britten, all of whom made significant impacts last week and will be players to watch in this game.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Concordia High School in Round Rock.
