Turnovers drown the Ducks in season opener versus Gatesville

Turnovers drown the Ducks in season opener versus Gatesville

The Gatesville Hornets spoiled the Taylor Ducks’ season opener for the third consecutive year with a 42-27 victory. The Ducks struggled with turnovers in critical moments, contributing to their defeat. Taylor Head Coach Earven Flowers attributed the loss to inexperience among his players.

“It’s always tough in the first game of the season, especially when we’re fielding a lot of guys who haven’t played on a Friday night before. That’s something they’re going to have to adjust to,” Flowers said.

The Taylor defense provided a glimmer of hope by generating key turnovers. Junior SS Stephen Rogers recorded a pick-six to give the Ducks a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Taylor also scored on a fumble recovery late in the third quarter to cut Gatesville’s lead to 28-14 heading into the fourth.

Taylor came into this game with uncertainty at the QB position as the Ducks used two quarterbacks tonight. Former tight end Eli Laurence started and showed promise early but struggled with interceptions, leading Flowers to insert sophomore QB Caleb Pachicano. Flowers noted the need for a more consistent quarterback moving forward.

“We need to find someone who can deliver consistent play, get us into the right plays, and avoid turnovers,” Flowers said.

Despite the loss, Flowers expressed pride in his team’s effort and resilience. “Both sides fought hard, and I’m proud of these kids. We were opportunistic at times and made plays that we practiced. This is just the preseason, and we’ll get things together and get this ball rolling,” he said.

Top performers for the Ducks included running back Andrias Fisher and wide receiver Damien Calico, each of whom scored a touchdown.

The Ducks fall to 0-1 and will next travel to Pflugerville County for a game on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
