GRANGER — It was the first preseason action of 2024 this week as Granger High School and Thrall High School varsity football squared at Lion Stadium in Granger for a scrimmage.
Granger will be led this season by Lions first-year Head Coach Gaston McDorman, who comes from the prestigious 4A football program Cuero High School. McDorman takes over a very successful Lions program this season for Stephen Brosch, who was promoted to principal of Granger High School.
“Our goals are simply to show up each and every day and try to be one percent better than the day before,” McDorman said. “We want to continue to live up to our core values, and if we are able to do that, then we hope to be able to achieve whatever it is that our players have set out to achieve.”
Thrall, under Tigers Head Coach Aaron Vanecek, is making the transition from Class 2A-1 in 2023 up to 3A-2 this season and the school seems up to the challenge.
“We feel good about the jump to 3A,” Vanecek said. “New teams with larger enrollments always present a unique challenge as the year goes on.
However, we felt like our previous 2A district was loaded with mature, wellcoached teams.” Granger has its next scrimmage on the road Aug. 22 at Riesel High School and will open the regular season Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. at Johnson City High School. Thrall will have a home scrimmage Aug. 22 vs. Milano High School and will open the regular season Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. hosting longtime rival Thorndale High School.
