Lady Ducks VB victorious in opener

ROCKDALE — The Taylor High School varsity volleyball team won its 2024 regular-season opener Tuesday, Aug.

13 on the road against Rockdale High School.

The Lady Ducks were victorious in four sets: 25-20, 19-25, 25-23 and 25-23.

This squad started the season off 1-0 against the host Lady Tigers as Taylor Head Coach Rylee Davis entered her second season in charge of the volleyball program. Davis set a high standard in her first year as head coach as the Lady Ducks set a program record in 2023 for wins in a season with 30, a district championship and a berth in the area playoffs with a hardfought loss to 4A state semifinalist Salado High School.

Taylor junior Makenna Watson was active for the Lady Ducks all over the court at libero as she had a team-high 18 digs, 22 serves received, five aces and four assists.

“Makenna also had an amazing season last year,” Davis said.

“Going into junior year, I find a lot of comfort in Makenna. She’s a naturalborn leader, who leads fearlessly and is unapologetically herself. There’s no doubt in my mind that she’ll perform even better than last year.”

Lady Ducks senior Haley Harms did it all for Taylor with a teamhigh 14 kills, 17 digs, 23 serves received and four assists.

“I think she’s set up to do phenomenally for us this year and she knows I have very high expectations of her to finish out her high school career, but she’ll rise to the occasion like she always does,” Davis said of Harms.

Junior Peyton Wamble had a team-high 31 assists with 14 digs, fellow junior Elena Martinez had nine kills and 10 serves received, sophomore Tiana Candee had eight kills and senior Katelyn Aderhold finished with six kills against Rockdale.

Taylor will continue to compete this weekend at the Round Rock Westwood Tournament and have its home opener Tuesday, Aug. 20 at 6 p.m. hosting Thrall High School.
