Taylor High School and Thrall High School returned to action Aug. 9 as the two varsity volleyball programs squared off Friday morning in Taylor for their first scrimmages of the weekend.
Both teams got their first live action of the month against opponents from other schools and rose to the challenge as players received valuable in-match reps.
“I think the beginning of the season is really about how to adapt to new scenarios and teammates, and finding each individual’s team identity and role,” Taylor secondyear Head Coach Rylee Davis said earlier this month. “I’m really excited to see who steps up and establishes themselves as a leader this season, and even more excited for us to all grow and achieve our goals together again.”
In her first year as head coach for Taylor in 2023, Davis led the Lady Ducks to a program- record 30 wins, a 4A-District 22 championship and a berth in the area round of the playoffs against eventual 4A state semifinalist Salado High School.
Thrall will look to continue its prestigious history in 2024 under Head Coach Megan Storms, who takes over for longtime previous coach Bethany Grissom after 12 seasons. Storms now leads the Tigerettes volleyball program following seven years as head coach of 6A Willis High School.
The host Lady Ducks and visiting Tigerettes also had scrimmages scheduled Friday against Round Rock Christian Academy and Austin LBJ High School. Taylor will continue scrimmages Saturday hosting Elgin High School, Academy High School and Killeen Chaparral High School while Thrall will travel to Mumford High School.
Taylor opens the 2024 regular season Tuesday, Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. on the road at Rockdale High School. Thrall will also travel Tuesday at 3 p.m. for a dual match with Lago Vista High School andLorena School in Lago Vista.
