Cheers erupted around Heritage Square as teachers from Taylor Independent School District competed for a spirit award during the district’s convocation Monday morning, Aug. 5.
After cheering back and forth with cheerleaders, Taylor Middle School teachers came out victorious as the school with the most spirit, receiving a large district flag as their prize.
“We’re all gathered as one and just getting the school year kicked in,” TMS special education teacher Terrie Holmstron said.
“Lots of new staff, so we’re very excited about it.”
The convocation is a gathering of the entire district’s faculty and staff at the beginning of each academic year to welcome in the new year and new staff, similar to an orientation. With a lot more to celebrate this year, the event resembled more of a party in honor of 100 years of being the Taylor Ducks.
“We just decided this year to kick it up a notch and kick off the year with a party atmosphere and get everybody pumped up ... and ready to instill that enthusiasm in their students for the year,” Taylor ISD Communications and Community Liaison Tim Crow said.
Students also participated in the celebration, including performances from the cheerleaders, Hi-Steppers, band and color guard and alumni who spoke about what it means to be a Duck.
“I’ve been a Duck for a very long time. It’s a sense of pride in your school. It’s a sense of pride in your community, doing the best you can do in whatever avenue we’re talking about,” Crow said.
