The Taylor High School volleyball program is ready to return to action Monday, Aug. 5 as the Lady Ducks begin tryouts for incoming ninth through 12th graders.
“It looks like volleyball is starting to gain popularity within the community considering our tryout numbers being up in comparison to last year,” Taylor Head Coach Rylee Davis said.
There is especially a lot of hype around what the volleyball program will be able to do following a historic 30-win season in 2023 under Davis’ first year as head coach.
“I think this season we’ll get to benefit from all the hard work the girls put in last year, not only on the court but also how hard they worked to get the community involved,” Davis said. “They’ve gotten more kids to fall in love with volleyball and we had a good showing at our volleyball camps this summer.”
The Lady Ducks have many players coming back at the varsity level in 2024 but are going to miss the leadership provided last year by its senior class of Hannah Wamble, Camryn Nunamaker, Ansley Reed and Ri’Queleigh Holmes- Grant.
“As far as what I’m looking for in early August, I’m just looking to build off what we established last year,” Davis said. “We graduated some rather fierce leaders and luckily have the core of our team still together.”
Taylor will have tryouts Monday and Tuesday, continue to practice and will host scrimmages Friday and Saturday in preparation of the season.
“I think the beginning of the season is really about how to adapt to new scenarios and teammates, and finding each individual’s team identity and role,” Davis said. “I’m really excited to see who steps up and establishes themselves as a leader this season, and even more excited for us to all grow and achieve our goals together again.”
The Lady Ducks’ varsity squad will open the regular season Tuesday, Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. on the road against Rockdale High School
