The Taylor High School football program is set to return to practice Monday, Aug. 5 as the Ducks come into a highly anticipated 2024 season.
Ninth through 12th graders are scheduled to report at 5:45 a.m. and will go through equipment handouts, meetings, practice and conditioning 6-10 a.m. Monday. Incoming freshmen are scheduled to have an orientation at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday.
The future with the Ducks’ football program is certainly bright under second-year Head Coach Earven Flowers as Taylor looks to return to the playoffs for a third straight season. There will be plenty of new faces who are expected to step up after such a large graduating class. Lots of buzz will be around the freshman team after the eighth-grade Ducks went undefeated last year.
“It’s first week and we had a pretty good offseason,” Flowers said. “Right now we’re just trying to find some of those pieces to see how they’re going to fit simply because we lost 28 seniors. The positive thing about it is the guys who are replacing them is they had some playing time but they just didn’t start.
They have game-time experience but they’re just going to have to carry more of a load now. I’m excited about it and I think we’re set up pretty well for the future.”
Taylor football will have its first day in full pads Saturday, Aug. 10 at 10 a.m. with Duck Day festivities that include a scrimmage between the sophomores through seniors.
The freshman will have their own scrimmage beginning at 11 a.m.
Ducks varsity football will continue practice throughout the month and will travel Aug. 16 for its first scrimmage at Sealy High School, host Jarrell High School Aug. 22 for its final scrimmage and open the 2024 regular season at home Friday, Aug. 30 at 7:30 p.m. versus Gatesville High School.
