In the Taylor Press ‘Get involved or don’t complain’ opinion article from July 7, Richard Stone is pleased to see some newcomers involved in Taylor’s community betterment efforts, and hopes they stay engaged. He’s not sure that will happen, though, since he’s seen the same 150 to 200 people show up to every civic event over the last 10 years.
I assert from recent experience that fresh personalities and talent aren’t always embraced in this little Texas town. Sincere intentions and the most diligent efforts can be met with cynicism, suspicion and discouragement.
I feel the next decade’s anticipated flood of new citizens will bring unstoppable richness and diversity to local civic efforts and organizations. Until then, we really should acknowledge that not everyone is made to feel welcome at Taylor’s community tables, and it’s our city that loses out.
