Before candidates started preparing for the Nov. 7 election, a handful of primary races still needed to be sorted out in Williamson County.
Elections were too close to call for a Republican nomination to the State Board of Education, a Democratic nomination for District 31 and a Democratic nomination for a place on the 3rd Court of Appeals after the March 5 vote, so runoffs were held last week.
County voters recorded a 2.82% turnout during the May 28 primary runoff election to decide the three races.
On the Republican side, incumbent Tom Maynard beat out Mary Bone, a Round Rock Independent School District trustee, to earn the party nomination for District 10 on the State Board of Education.
Maynard won with 52.54% of the runoff vote and will face Democratic nominee Raquel Saenz Ortiz and Libertarian nominee Gerald McAlexander.
There was not a clear winner for who would challenge incumbent John Carter for the District 31 representative election, so a Democratic runoff was held. The district is for the United States Congress and includes Taylor.
Stuart Whitlow defeated Brian Walbridge in a result that saw him capture 72.39% of the votes. Whitlow will run against Carter in the November election, who is seeking to earn re-election to the representative office he’s held since 2003.
Meanwhile, Maggie Ellis earned the Democratic nomination for the Place 2 of the 3rd Court of Appeals. Ellis topped Edward Smith in a 78.64% runoff landslide.
The nominee will match up against the Republican primary winner, John Messinger.
