Homeowner shoots intruder

A man was shot by a resident Monday night as he entered a home uninvited.

The Taylor Police Department is investigating a shooting that happened in the 2300 block of Donna Street. According to police reports, officers responded to a call at 11:35 p.m. for a man with a knife attempting to enter a house on Donna Street. As officers were in route to the address, the man was in the house and had been shot by the homeowner.

When police arrived, the suspect had exited the home and was lying on the front porch with a gunshot wound to his hip. Officers identified the suspect as Austin Sumpter, 23, of Thrall.

He was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

According to police reports, the man was carrying a large knife with a sheath that was inscribed “Hail Satan.”

Sumpter was arrested Wednesday, May 29, after he was released from the hospital. He was charged with burglary of a habitation with commission of a felony, a second degree felony. He is still in custody at the Williamson County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
