May 29, 1953 — New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary and sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain. The feat arguably launched a revolution in mountain climbing that focused on increasing difficulty.
