Taylor native named chief medical officer at Tarleton

STEPHENVILLE — A Taylor High School graduate is working to help keep college students healthy.

Matt Maruska has been named Tarleton State University’s first Chief Medical Officer.

In the role, Maruska will serve as Medical Director for campus health and well-being. He will also be the head team physician for Tarleton State athletics while managing the direction of student health and wellness activities.

“As Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Maruska’s impact will be instrumental in assuring our entire student body has access to excellent medical care,” Tarleton State President Dr. James Hurley said in a press release. “We are committed to elevating the healthcare and well-being of our campus community.”

Board certified in family medicine, Maruska will lead the on-campus Student Wellness Center. “I’m very excited and thankful for the opportunity to help guide Tarleton State University forward,” said Maruska. “Under my leadership as the new chief medical officer, our goal will be to help improve medical services for the whole student body.”

Maruska holds a doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from the University of North Texas Health Science Center-Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine where he completed the inaugural Rural Osteopathic Medical Education Program. He also has a bachelor of science degree in biomedical science from Texas A&M where he graduated cum laude.

He currently serves on the medical advisory committee for the Western Athletic Conference and is a state delegate for the Erath and Summerville County Medical Association.

Maruska,1995 Taylor High School salutatorian, is the son of Gary and Annette Maruska of Taylor.
