More canvases are available for residents to show off public art.
The city of Taylor and the Taylor Arts Advisory Board (TAAB) invites local artists to submit an art proposal for the Portal Project. The program allows people to paint elevated manhole covers on the hike and bike walk off Burkett Street, from Ninth Street down to Fourth Street.
TAAB seeks to promote public art throughout the downtown district and promote the safe use of the hike and bike trail. These pieces will be additions to the city’s public art collection.
The artists are invited to explore their inner voice. Each design will be completed “in the round” on an elevated manhole cover on the hike and bike trail. The artist’s proposal should include full color project design and labor timeline to completion. Upon selection, each artist will be assigned a designated portal – i.e. raised manhole – and allocated a timeframe for completion. Artwork can be completed as teamwork.
Artwork must be allages appropriate and family friendly. Not allowed are obscenities, inappropriate nudity, sex or innuendo, depictions of drug and alcohol abuse, horror, racism, degradation of individuals or groups, violence, desecration of cultural symbols, blasphemy, profanity, sexism and gang-related art.
The Taylor Arts Advisory Board and Portal Project Subcommittee will provide all exterior paint for painting of manhole cover. TAAB will prime surface before scheduled date and will coordinate with selected artists to purchase supplies.
Proposals for the Portal Project should include one full color concept sketch. The physical layout document is available from [email protected]. Artists should include a statement appropriately explaining imagery use, meaning and inspirational sources. Include your name, address, email and phone number.
