HUTTO — Hutto City Council member Dana Wilcott has presented
her resignation from council, forfeiting her current seat and officially signaling her intention not to participate in a runoff election with challenger Evan Porterfield. The letter was dated May 5 and officially received by the city secretary May 10.
“As much as I’d like to stay and fight for the residents of Hutto, I’ve come to the painful realization that this ‘Hutto’ is beyond redemption under your leadership,” Wilcott wrote in the letter addressed to Mayor Mike Snyder. “Your toxic presence has poisoned our community, and I refuse to be complicit in your destructive agenda any longer.”
Wilcott topped the field of five candidates for her Place 5 City Council seat with 305 votes, 32.94%, short of the 464 she would have needed to avoid a runoff. The secondhighest number of votes went to business owner Evan Porterfield, with 174 votes, just under 18.79% of the total.
Wilcott was first elected in a June 10, 2023 runoff to fill the unexpired term of former council member Krystal Kinsey. She has been vocal about her dissatisfaction with the mayor’s leadership throughout her 11 months on City Council.
At the beginning of the election cycle, the council member posted on her social media that she was considering not running for re-election. After the May 4 results put her in a run-off, she asked her followers to vote for Porterfield rather than her, but told Taylor Press that would serve if elected.
“I hope that my resignation serves as a wake-up call to the good people of Hutto to rise up and reclaim our community from the clutches of incompetence and bigotry. The fight is far from over, and I pray Hutto becomes one we can be proud of again,” her letter reads.
Hutto’s May 16 City Council agenda contains a resolution to accept Wilcott’s resignation and appoint Porterfield as the elected Place 5 City Council member. If approved, Porterfield is scheduled to be sworn in during the meeting.
