Lady Ducks tennis focused on confidence

Before qualifying Lady Ducks tennis players competed at their latest meet, Coach Kevin Williams wanted to make sure they believed they could advance to the next level.

The girls’ tennis team, who won their district meet April 25-26 in Jarrell, headed to Bryan for the region meet Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11.

“I like to tell them they can advance, they’re more than capable of it,” Williams said. “Sometimes with tennis, it’s a mental game even more so than an actual skill game. So, I’ve been trying to stay upbeat and positive to support them.”

Regional qualifiers included reigning state champion sophomore Rylee Michna in singles, senior Julianna Gonzales in singles, the doubles pair of juniors Maci and Molli Kennick and the doubles pair of senior Abby Aplin and junior Krista Randig.

To qualify for state, the individuals or doubles teams need to place in the top two of 16 entries for their respective competitions.

“I’ve been with the seniors for the last three years and the juniors since they were freshmen, so it’s fun to watch them grow up,” Williams said. “Three years ago, the girls were the weakest part of the (tennis) program and now they’re the strongest part. I’m proud of their accomplishments and their determination.”

Check the Wednesday, May 15 edition of the Taylor Press for updated region results.
