AUSTIN — Two Thrall High School track and field athletes competed at the sport’s highest level this past week.
Melaina Grissom and Avery Koonce took on the UIL 2A state championship Friday, May 3, at Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium in Austin.
Grissom, who advanced to state in two events by placing in the top three in multiple jumping events, finished fifth in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump. She recorded a 16 feet and 5.75 inches mark in the long jump and a 35 feet and 11.5 inches mark in the triple jump.
Koonce finished seventh in the 100meter dash with a time of 12.70 seconds. She recorded a “did not start” in the 200-meter dash, according to Texas MileSplit.
“We are so proud of our State Tigerettes, Melaina Grissom and Avery Koonce,” Thrall Independent School District posted on Facebook after the meet. “Thank you both for representing Thrall Athletics so well today and these past four years.”
Both Grissom and Koonce are set to continue their track and field careers at the next level. Koonce will head to Colorado Springs to run for the Air Force Academy, while Grissom recently announced her commitment to compete for Tarleton State University.
