MUMFORD — The Thrall High School varsity softball team used a complete pitching performance from sophomore Miley Pokorny to move past Burton.
Pokorny struck out 11 opposing bats and gave up only five hits to lead the Tigerettes to a 9-1 victory Saturday, May 4, to advance out of the area round.
The Tigerettes got on the board offensively in the bottom of the second inning after Burton committed an error and Mikayla Velasquez hit a sacrifice fly, scoring two runs.
In the bottom of the third inning, Kyla Gee singled, Melaina Grissom was struck by a pitch and Velasquez singled, each adding one run to make the score 5-0.
Pokorny did not allow a hit until the fourth inning, which was the same frame the Lady Panthers scored their lone run.
Grissom led the Tigerettes with three RBIs throughout the game. Meanwhile, Kenzie Engelke led the teams in hits with two hits on a .500 batting percentage outing.
Thrall matches up with district rival Thorndale in the regional quarterfinals this week. Game one will be 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, in Hutto. Game two will be 6 p.m. Thursday, May 9, in Taylor.
If a third game is necessary, the teams will play 6 p.m. Friday, May 10, in Taylor.
