GEORGETOWN — Williamson County officials issued a critical warning to residents following a “staggering” increase in fentanyl poisonings in neighboring Travis County.
Reports indicate a 1000% spike in fentanyl poisoning incidents, with approximately 70 poisoning/overdoses and 8 deaths reported from this past week, officials said.
A combined statement from the Sheriff’s Office, Cedar Park Police Department and Texas Against Fentanyl said it is imperative for county residents to be aware of the dangers posed by fentanyl.
“We cannot overstate the urgency of this situation,” Sheriff Mike Gleason said. “The recent spike in fentanyl poisonings in Travis County serves as a stark reminder of the deadly nature of this substance. We must all take proactive steps to protect ourselves and our loved ones.”
Anyone looking to anonymously report drug-related activity or human trafficking is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office Organized Crime Unit at 512-943-1170.
Mike Harmon, Cedar Park Police Chief, said Williamson County can make a difference and save lives through education, awareness and collaborative efforts. “We must come together as a community to confront this crisis head on,” Harmon said.
