WALLER — Taylor High School varsity baseball team used a ninerun third inning to defeat Houston Scarborough in the first round of the playoffs.
The Ducks won 14-0 in a five inning neutralsite ballgame in Waller, Thursday, May 2, and advanced to the area round.
Head Coach Kale McQuillen said the team’s performance is exactly what his staff wanted to see in the matchup.
“Our main takeaway from last night’s game was being able to work on a lot of the little details such as working counts, being able to move runners into scoring position and also being able to execute,” McQuillen said Friday.
Taylor’s explosive third inning came from batters drawing five walks, hitting two doubles, recording two singles and taking advantage of two Spartan errors.
McQuillen said the Ducks were able to put up the high-scoring inning from being opportunistic.
“We put a series of hits together and were able to move runners to get into scoring position,” the coach said. “We executed at the plate with runners in scoring position and that helped us a lot.”
Defensively, McQuillen said his team played well with limiting errors and being able to rotate pitchers. Next week, the Ducks will play the winner of the China Spring versus Jarrell series. Taylor’s area round series will likely be Thursday, May 9 through Saturday, May 11.
