Taylor Head Coach Kale McQuillen said his team is looking to do more than just repeat the same success it had in the playoffs last year.
After making it to the 4A Region 3 finals last season, the Ducks are set to open up this year’s postseason Thursday, May 2, against Houston Scarborough in Waller at 5:30 p.m. in the bi-district round.
McQuillen said Taylor (1510-2, 7-3 in district) is not reminiscing on last year’s deep run, under former Coach Justin Adams, but is starting from scratch.
“We are going in with a clean slate and a new mindset,” McQuillen said. “Last year was a good run. However, we want to make this year even better.”
Since the matchup against the Spartans is a single-game matchup, McQuillen has emphasized what his team needs to do to stay loose.
He said the key to this playoff season is to have a good approach at the plate, continuing to work the count and finding ways to get on base.
Similarly, the Ducks are focused on throwing strikes, limiting errors and making routine defensive plays when their opponents are up to bat.
“Most importantly, we constantly remind the team to play the game that they love and have fun with it,” McQuillen said. “We remind them to trust each other, play as a team and the rest will fall into place.”
Taylor beat Houston Scarborough 18-0 in the first round of the playoffs last year.
