St. Mary’s golf places second at state

AZLE — The Rams returned to Taylor with some hardware this week.

The St. Mary’s Catholic High School men’s and women’s golf teams competed at the Texas Christian Athletic Fellowship State Championship golf tournament Tuesday, April 16, in Azle.

The teams captured state runner-up plaques in both the men’s and women’s team competitions.

Coach Traci Zimmerhanzel said the team’s success was earned.

“I am extremely proud of this team,” Zimmerhanzel said. “These young adults practiced four days a week. They put the time in, and it paid off.”

While St. Mary’s won silver for both the girls and the boys, senior Brady Altman took home a noteworthy individual medal honor. Altman won the men’s state championship.

“(Winning state) means a lot to me, especially it being my senior year,” Altman said. “I played the past four years on the golf team ... I’ve never won anything big. So, it was really awesome to get to earn that during the final tournament of my senior year.”

In the women’s competition, sophomore Mercy Barta finished second, followed by sophomore Leah Altman with a third-place finish.

The second-place men’s team members were senior Brady Altman, junior Ethan Lively, eighth grader Joseph Barta and freshman C.J. Williams.

The second-place women’s’ team members were sophomores Leah Altman, Mercy Barta and Sydney Zimmerhanzel.

Other St. Mary’s golfers that competed in the state championships were junior Kolbe Barta, junior David Pena and sophomore Mikal Rethlake.

The coaches for the St. Mary’s golf teams are Zimmerhanzel and Rick Cobia.
