HIPPO BITES

Little bits of big news

Candidates create their own forum

HUTTO — With no public forum having been announced for city council candidates to discuss their views, the candidates took up the reins and created their own.

The Hutto City Council Candidate Forum will be an online event from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 25. The event is listed as a “non-partisan forum featuring candidates running for the Hutto City Council.”

The initiative was started by Marcus Coleman, a candidate for Place 5 in City Council. He reached out to the other candidates through social media to invite their participation.

“I believe it’s crucial for our community to have the opportunity to engage with all candidates running for Hutto City Council,” Coleman posted.

Each candidate will have the opportunity to introduce themselves and answer questions from the audience. The event is being held over Google Meet, which has tools allowing audience participation. To join in, log on to https://meet.google. com/okp-kkop-mfr.

Early voting for the May 4 general election begins Monday, April 22.

Hippo in the running

The Hutto Hippo is nearing the finish line in the race to be named as best high school mascot in America by Scoreboard Live. The contest is run like an NCAA tournament. Last year’s contest saw the Hutto Hippo win the state title, and the Hutto mascot entered this year as the No. 10 seed.

Last week, the Hippos beat the (Arkansas) Alma Airedales in the “Sweet 16” tourney to earn a place in this week’s “Elite 8.” They face off against No. 13-seeded (Wisconsin) Rhinelander Hodags. The winner will advance to the Final Four.

Voting in this week’s contest ends Monday, April 22 at 10:59 p.m. The link for voting can be found at scorebooklive.com/ texas/schools/27089-hutto.

Earth day event at farmers market

The Hutto Farmers’ Market is celebrating Earth Day this Sunday with an Earth Day Social & Plant Swap event. The festivities feature kids’ activities and games, live music and a local artisan market with vendors of all types.

Those wanting to participate in the plant swap need to check in with their plants at noon. Plants to be swapped should be healthy, pest free and labeled with the name and care instructions. Any size of plant is welcome. The swap will work on a token system.

Educational activities will enhance the Earth Day experience, including a talk from Cory Denena, the man who almost single-handedly has been building and maintaining some of Hutto’s hiking trails.

The event will run from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at 209 Farley St. Admission is free.
