TEMPLE — The Hutto High School varsity baseball team won its first 6A-District 12 game of the season Tuesday, April 2 with a dominant 8-2 road win over Temple High School.

The Hippos were led by Jayden Saxbury on the mound and at the plate against the Wildcats.

Saxbury picked up the win with three strikeouts and only two hits allowed in five innings pitched.

In the top of the first inning, Saxbury collected three of his four runs batted in with one swing as he hit a two-out triple that scored Zachary Torres, Randy Cardenas and Jackson Skorzewski to put the Hippos up 3-0.

Hutto continued to do more damage on offense with two outs in the second frame as Aiden Torres-Pollard lined a double that scored Torres and Cardenas to make it 5-0 early.

The Hippos would add three more insurance runs in the game as Aidan Eierdam scored on an error in the fourth inning, Saxbury had an RBI single in the sixth that scored Cardenas and Roman Grametbauer had an RBI fielder’s choice to score Eierdam in the seventh frame.

In addition to Saxbury on the mound, Noah Castillo came in to pitch the final two innings in relief as he struck out three Temple batters without allowing a hit or a run.

Hutto (8-14 overall, 1-4 district record), under Head Coach Edward Stringer, continued district play on the road Friday night at Copperas Cove High School.

The Hippos will be home Saturday, April 6 at 1 p.m. to host non-district opponent Hays High School and remain home Wednesday, April 10 at 7 p.m. in a rematch with Copperas Cove.
