HUTTO — The Hutto High School varsity softball team held its own Tuesday, March 26 as the Lady Hippos picked up a 6-4 district victory at home versus rival Pflugerville Weiss High School.

The Lady Hippos got on the board in the bottom of the first inning as sophomore Kenna Spence hit an RBI double to score freshman Makenna Castillo for an early 1-0 lead.

After the visiting Lady Wolves scored three straight runs, Castillo hit an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the third inning to score junior Makayla Sanchez to pull within a 3-2 deficit.

Hutto would tie the game at 3-3 on a bases-loaded walk drawn by senior Hailey Leluga and added two more insurance runs in the fourth frame as junior Makenzie Klos scored on an error and Castillo came home to score on a wild pitch with the Lady Hippos in front 5-3.

Weiss would inch closer in the sixth inning with a run but Hutto answered as Castillo would again score on another Lady Wolves’ wild pitch to make it 6-4, a score that would hold the rest of the way.

Lady Hippos senior Megan Blakeney picked up the win in the circle as she pitched seven innings with three strikeouts, only two walks issued and just one earned run allowed.

Hutto (16-11 overall, 4-3 record in 6A-District 12), under Head Coach Matthew Mullins, is coming off a lopsided loss March 28 at home to Midway High School but will look to bounce back April 5 at 7 p.m. as the Lady Hippos travel to take on Harker Heights High School.
