Area boys powerlifters compete at state

ABILENE — Taylor High School and Thrall High School boys varsity powerlifting team members competed this past weekend at the 2024 Texas High School Powerlifting Association Boys State Championship meet held at Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene in their respective divisions.

TAYLOR DUCKS

The Ducks, under Head Coach Armando Talavera, had three lifters compete with junior Ernest Alderete, senior Colbey Solis and senior Brandt Whitlow as the trio each set a personal record in total pounds lifted.

Alderete placed seventh out of 18 lifters in the 308-pound class with 1,715 total pounds lifted: 715 on the squat, 500 on the bench press and 500 on the deadlift.

Solis placed 22nd out of 35 lifters in the 198-pound class with 1,435 total pounds lifted: 615 on the squat, 330 on the bench press and 490 on the deadlift.

Whitlow placed 25th in the 181-pound class with 1,255 total pounds lifted: 490 on the squat, 275 on the bench press and 490 on the deadlift.

THRALL TIGERS

The Tigers, under Head Coach Brandon Raesz, had two lifters compete with junior Hayden Heselmeyer and fellow junior Trace Riggs.

Heselmeyer made the podium for Thrall in the 198-pound class in fourth place as he lifted 1,580 total pounds: 630 on the squat, 390 on the bench press and 560 on the deadlift.

Riggs placed 10th out of 16 entries in the 198-pound class as he lifted 1,420 total pounds: 535 on the squat, 360 on the bench press and 525 on the deadlift.
