BELTON — The Taylor High School girls varsity soccer team captured a 4A bi-district championship Monday, March 25 as the Lady Patos won a thrilling 2-1 match over Robinson High School.
The first half had strong defense from both teams, especially the Lady Patos as they were able to consistently stop the Lady Rockets’ offensive attack deep in Taylor territory.
However, with just seconds left in the first half, Taylor was able to get on the scoreboard as freshman Kaitlin Crane put up a shot on goal from roughly 40 yards out. The wind helped carry the ball and the Robinson goalkeeper misjudged it, giving the Lady Patos a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The second half of the match was more back-and-forth action but Robinson was able to get an equalizer with just over 16 minutes left in regulation. Taylor wasted no time to take the lead back about a minute and a half later as sophomore Tessa Kopecky scored in front of the Robinson net on a crossing pass from junior Kaleigh Woods to go right back in front 2-1.
The Lady Patos locked in on defense, notably from junior Zari Thompson, the rest of the match as Robinson was unable to equalize the score again, giving Taylor an empathic 2-1 victory and a bi-district title.
Taylor (15-9 overall record), under Head Coach Jose Flores, is scheduled to continue its postseason journey Saturday, March 30 at 1 p.m. in the area round against Needville High School. The playoff match will be held at neural site La Grange High School.
