Hutto softball wins pair

HUTTO — The Hutto High School varsity softball team picked up a couple of highscoring victories as the Lady Hippos defeated Lago Vista High School and Temple High School.

In a non-district contest, the Lady Hippos scored early and often March 8 in a 12-1 run rule victory in their first home game of the 2024 season. Hutto used an eight-run first inning to take a commanding lead over the Lady Vikings and did not look back.

Kenna Spence and Mia Sanchez both drove in two runs apiece, while Makayla Martinez hit a solo home run and Jayda Gallegos had an RBI in the win over Lago Vista. The Lady Hippos were able to take advantage of seven errors committed on defense by the Lady Vikings.

Elizabeth Espinosa picked up the win in the circle for Hutto as she struck out seven batters in 4.0 innings pitched.

HUTTO LADY HIPPOS 11, TEMPLE LADY WILDCATS 8

Trailing 8-2 heading into the top of the sixth inning on the road against 6A-District 12 foe Temple High School, Hutto used a resilient comeback March 11 to top the Lady Wildcats 11-8.

Martinez hit a game-tying three-run home in the sixth frame to make it 8-8, while an RBI single by M’Kayla Hicks gave Hutto its first lead of the night at 9-8.

Makenna Castillo tied for a team-high with three runs batted in and hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning, while the Lady Hippos also got one RBI each from Spence and Makenzie Klos.

Espinosa got another win as she came in to pitch 3.0 innings in relief, struck out four batters and did not let a run score.

Hutto (13-9 overall, 1-1 in district play), under Head Coach Matthew Mullins, was scheduled March 12 to host Harker Heights High School.
