The Taylor High School boys and girls varsity golf teams have been in action under first-year Head Coach Jay Reed as the Ducks and Lady Ducks gradually improve during this 2024 season.
The Ducks are led by Luke Thompson, Tristan Gonzales, Eamon Neas as well as Jake Mikulencak and Josh Mikulencak. The Lady Ducks also were able to field a full team of four girls with Lacey Thompson, Caroline Tate, McKenzee Sunvison and Ansley Reed.
“We’re understanding kind of where we’re at in the district and what we’ve got to do,” Coach Reed said. “Our goal for the girls’ and the guys’ side is to make it to regionals as a team. In order to do that, we’ve got to get top two in district.”
The Thompsons recently had a strong showing in February at the Colovista Golf Club in Bastrop. Luke Thompson shot an 81 and was first individually amongst boys competitors, while Lacey Thompson was at the top of the field for the girls.
Lacey Thompson also placed sixth overall for the girls at Frisch Auf Valley Country Club at the La Grange tournament, while Tate came in seventh place in Bastrop and 16th place in La Grange.
Jake Mikulencak recently shot a 90 at the Golf Club at Star Ranch for the Hutto tournament in a large boys field of mostly 5A and 6A schools, which was a personal best for him.
“Golf is very interesting because you can improve a great amount just by fixing one or two things,” Coach Reed said.
As district play approaches, the Ducks and Lady Ducks will continue to make strides through practice and get to that next level on the course.
“There are a lot of rules to golf, so just trying to make sure you’re on top of that,” Coach Reed said. “You also don’t want to over-coach, especially with some of these better players because you don’t want them in their head all the time.”
Taylor is scheduled to host a pair of golf tournaments to begin the month. The boys will play March 4 at 9 a.m. and the girls set for March 6 at 9 a.m. at Mustang Creek Golf Course.
