HUTTO — The Hutto High School varsity baseball team picked up its first home win of the 2024 season Tuesday, Feb. 27 as the Hippos got a 5-1 victory over Elgin High School.
After the visiting Wildcats got on the board with their first and only run in the top of the second inning, the Hutto bats got to work in the bottom of the third frame. Following a sacrifice fly by Aiden Eierdam to knot the score at 1-1, Chase Perez scored on a passed ball to give the Hippos a 2-1 advantage. Hutto padded its lead as Aiden Torres-Pollard smacked a two-run triple that put the Hippos up 4-1.
The Hippos added one more insurance run to make it 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Randy Cardenas.
Hutto had a strong collective effort on the mound with four pitchers combining to allow just one run. Julian Maese got the start and had two strikeouts in two innings, Blake Hall struck out four batters in two frames with no hits allowed, Kolten Morton had three strikeouts in two innings and Aiden Biehle pitched the final frame without allowing a run to cross home plate.
The Hippos, under Head Coach Hollis Stringer, were scheduled Feb. 29 through March 2 to compete at a tournament in Corpus Christi.
