GRANGER — The Granger High School varsity softball team began 2A-District 27 play with a bang Tuesday, Feb. 27 as the Lady Lions hung on for a thrilling 11-10 victory at home over Rosebud-Lott High School.

Trailing the visiting Lady Cougars 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning, the Lady Lions got on the board with two runs as sophomore Izzy Tavernier had an RBI double and freshman Brooklyn Gaswint plated a run with a single to make it just a 4-2 deficit.

After Rosebud-Lott added a run in the top of the fifth frame, the Granger offense exploded with an eight-run inning to take a 10-5 lead. The Lady Lions had a two-run double by sophomore Abigail Crouch, another two runs driven home on a double by Tavernier, an RBI single by freshman Peyton Petru, an RBI double by Gaswint and she would later come home on a steal of home.

The Lady Cougars tallied a run in the top of the sixth inning but the Lady Lions answered right back with a sacrifice fly from Crouch as they maintained an 11-6 lead going into the top of the seventh inning.

Rosebud-Lott had one last rally with four runs in the frame but came up just short. Granger sophomore Ariana Herrera came in to pitch and got a clutch strikeout of the final Lady Cougars’ batter, stranding the potential tying run on third base.

The Lady Lions, under Head Coach Jennifer Fudge, were scheduled March 1-2 to compete at the Taylor Tournament.
