FLORENCE — The Granger High School varsity softball team had a successful time Feb. 22-24 at the Florence Tournament with a perfect 4-0 mark.
GRANGER LADY LIONS 6, FLORENCE LADY BUFFALOES 0
Behind the bat of Lady Lions sophomore Ariana Herrera and the arm of senior Payton Filla, Granger opened up tournament play with a 6-0 shutout win over Florence High School.
Herrera was a perfect 3-of-3 at the plate and drove in three runs, while Filla pitched a no-hitter in 4.0 innings in the circle for the Lady Lions with eight strikeouts and just two walks issued.
GRANGER LADY LIONS 6, LAGO VISTA LADY VIKINGS 5
Granger was able to edge Lago Vista High School 6-5 in a back-and-forth affair. Lady Lions senior Montana Moore delivered the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the third inning, while Herrera added two runs batted in of her own.
GRANGER LADY LIONS 15, CEDAR CREEK LADY EAGLES 1
The bats were alive for Granger as the Lady Lions cruised to a 15-1 victory over Cedar Creek High School. Moore and Herrera each drove in three runs, while sophomore Izzy Tavernier drove in two runs of her own and hit the Lady Lions’ first home run of the season. Filla again picked up the win for Granger as she had four strikeouts in 4.0 innings pitched.
GRANGER LADY LIONS 11, NONVARSITY OPPONENT 0
The Lady Lions concluded their time in Florence with an 11-0 shutout win over a non-varsity tournament opponent. Granger senior Clarissa Miller drove in a team-high three runs, while Tavernier added two RBI of her own in the victory. Herrera pitched a no-hitter in three innings with seven strikeouts and just three walks allowed.
With the team’s lone loss being a hard-fought 8-5 defeat Feb. 20 in the season opener to Rockdale High School, Granger Head Coach Jennifer Fudge’s squad is scheduled Feb. 27 to open 2A-District 27 play hosting Rosebud-Lott High School. The Lady Lions will then compete March 1-2 at the Taylor Tournament.
