SEGUIN — The Taylor High School varsity baseball team continued its first week of the 2024 season Feb. 22-24 at the Seguin Tournament against 5A and 6A teams.

The Ducks opened up with a 7-2 loss to San Antonio O’Connor High School, fell just short 7-5 to San Antonio Brennan High School and tied San Antonio Wagner High School 1-1. However, the Ducks ended their time in Seguin on a high note with a 5-3 victory over the Warriors of Comal Pieper High School.

After Pieper got on the board early with a 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Ducks’ offense came alive in the bottom of the second frame with four runs to take the lead. A leadoff double by junior Kaddy Maravilla got things going for Taylor which led to an RBI single from senior Dominick Hartman, a bases-loaded walk drawn by junior Nick Treuter, senior Ayden Gutierrez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and junior Mario Aguero also took a bases-loaded walk.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Ducks got one more insurance run off the bat of Hartman on an RBI single to push the lead to 5-3, a score that would hold the rest of the way.

Ducks standout senior pitcher Chris Perez picked up his second victory of the week as he struck out 10 batters in 6.0 innings on the mound with just two earned runs allowed.

Taylor (2-2-1 overall record), under Head Coach Kale McQuillen, was scheduled Feb. 27 to host Lockhart High School and will compete beginning Feb. 29 at the Lago Vista Tournament.
