Tigers sweep through Thrall tourney

CASEY GEORG Special to the Press

THRALL — The Thrall Tigerettes bounced back from a season-opening loss to sweep their five games at the Thrall tournament over the weekend. The Tigerettes (5-1), currently ranked sixth in the latest TGCA poll, picked up wins over five schools of larger classification to capture the tournament title.

“We played well defensively,” Thrall Coach Matt Pokorny said. “We only had three errors in five games. I’m super proud of the work these ladies have put in to get to this point.”

In their opening game, the Tigerettes surrendered a run to the Academy Lady Bees in the top of the first inning but rallied for a 5-1 win. Kenzie Engelke led the Tigerettes with a pair of hits and drove in two runs. Miley Pokorny (4-1) picked up the win in the circle, surrendering one run on four hits.

Against Taylor, in their second game of the tournament, the Tigerettes overcame a pair of errors to rally past the Lady Ducks 5-3. Taylor had taken a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the third, taking advantage of a walk and a Tigerette error, but Thrall tallied four runs in the top of the fifth on a pair of singles and two walks to get the win.

Thrall made the most of four hits to post the win. Miley Pokorny picked up the win, scattering five hits over four innings of work, while striking out five. Elicia Martinez drove in a pair of runs for Taylor. Anaih Arroyo took the loss for the Lady Ducks, giving up five runs on four hits.

On Friday, the Tigerettes scored eight in the bottom of the second inning and rolled to a 9-3 win over Cedar Creek. Dezi Lopez drove in three runs in the win, while Adelynn Bishop picked up the win in the circle, giving up three runs on five hits.

Next up was the Giddings Lady Buffaloes. Miley Pokorny surrendered one run on one hit to get the win. Lopez went two for two with two runs batted in and Thrall picked up a 4-1 win.

In their final game, the Tigerettes got their second onehitter from Miley Pokorny, and, as was the case throughout the tournament, Thrall made the most of their hits to record a 3-1 win.

“Miley was a force in the circle with pitching four of five games with 18 strikeouts and only five runs earned,” Coach Pokorny said. “Defensively, Dezi played great at shortstop and also had a home run against Cedar Creek.”

“We are moving in the right direction as a team and we look to continue our improvement offensively and defensively as a team,” Pokorny added.

The Tigerettes will play in the Florence tournament beginning on Thursday and continuing through Saturday. They will then take part beginning Feb. 29 in the Taylor tournament.
