The Ducks baseball team wrapped day one at the La Grange tourney this past Thursday, March 10 finishing 1-1. Taylor was shut out in their first game against Bellville, 6-0, and then used the combined pitching effort of Cohen Tyree and Matthew Aplin to notch a no-hitter against the host Leopards, 2-0.
Taylor managed just one hit against Bellville on a single by Tyree in the Ducks’ half of the fourth inning. Brahmas pitching sent the Ducks down on strike 12 times in the game.
In their second game, the Taylor offense picked things up and collected five hits and scored two runs. Taylor got on the board in the top of the sixth inning. Jake Jansky led off with an infield single. After back-to-back outs, Tyree was intentionally given a pass to first base. Chris Perez then singled to drive home Jansky to give Taylor the 1-0 lead. Prior to Aiden Aguero going down on strikes, Tyree stole home to put the Ducks up 2-0.
Tyree and Aplin shut down the La Grange Leopards through seven innings striking out nine and walking just four.
Earlier in the week, Taylor dropped their district opener against Salado, 5-2. Taylor took an early 2-0 lead against the Eagles but surrendered runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to Salado, who came away with the win. Aplin finished 2-for-3 against the Eagles. Salado pitcher Strickland led on the mound striking out 15 Taylor batters.
The Ducks entered day two of the tournament, March 11, with a .500 record overall at 6-6. They started the day against Yoakum and then took on Madisonville later on Friday.
