THRALL — A local school board election race now has one less hat in the mix.
Drew Neal signed a certificate of withdrawal Monday, Feb. 12 for the Thrall Independent School District trustee election in May.
Neal said when he decided to place his name on the ballot, he did so in hopes of running for a seat that was soon to be vacated.
“Our world is covered in sin and brokenness, and my intent was to fill that spot to make sure that God stays in our school district,” Neal told the Taylor Press. “I am not a politician, and I do not possess any great knowledge of public-school politics. However, I do believe it is our job as parents and followers of Christ to protect our youth at all costs.”
Neal is a battalion chief with Hutto Fire Rescue and serves as an elder with The Fellowship Church in Taylor. He said he is connected to Thrall ISD because he has children that attend the district and he coaches in local youth sports leagues.
“After confirming that Rodrigo Reyes and Stephanie Ochoa were running for re-election, as well as Domingo Valdez being on the ballot, I knew I could confidently withdraw myself from the race,” Neal said.
Neal said he is confident the principles of protecting the youth will be upheld by his recommended candidates.
He said Ochoa and Reyes have done an excellent job serving Thrall ISD and hopes they will be able to continue to do so.
“I will also be supporting (Valdez) in the race as I know he brings great character and knowledge to the table,” Neal told the Taylor Press. “Nothing we do in life should be for selfgain or public recognition, rather all should be done to glorify God.”
In addition to Ochoa, Reyes and Valdez, Mark Jarosek will also be on the ballot for the Thrall ISD election.
The last day to file for election to city council or a school board is Friday, Feb. 16.
