Legacy students carry with creativity

Legacy Early College High School students ditched their normal backpacks in favor of household items last week.
The school hosted its “Anything but a Backpack” themed day Thursday, Feb. 8, where students carried their school supplies in unusual objects.
Principal Erika Cantwell said the theme was inspired by the Legacy ECHS Student Council group.
“Our student leaders have been working to create fun and unique experiences for our student body,” Cantwell said. “They hope to build school spirit and enhance school culture by offering bimonthly theme days for students to engage in throughout the semester.”
Students carried their textbooks and writing utensils in unique objects like a barbecue grill, a shopping cart, a barrel and drawer cabinets.
Cantwell said the Student Council set the “Anything but a Backpack” theme into motion by starting with a brainstorming process that involved researching national themes.
The leaders researched and then offered choices for the student body to vote on, Cantwell said.
“We want Legacy to be a unique atmosphere that students look forward to and want to show up to each day,” Cantwell said.
She added that the theme days are one way the campus can reward students.
Cantwell said Legacy students commit to earning an associate degree by the time they graduate, which is hard work.
“Light-hearted themed days help our students stay connected and make school a fun place where they can express their creativity and uniqueness,” Cantwell said. “That is the least we can offer to our students that make an effort to show up and work hard towards those big future goals.”
The next Legacy ECHS themed day this month is “Adam Sandler” day.
