Work begins on Hutto Megasite access road

HUTTO – Braving the cold temperature and strong wind, more than 50 people showed up to celebrate the groundbreaking for Hutto Megasite’s east-west spine road. The road will connect FM 3349 with County Road 132, and provides connectivity through the site for the adjoining Titan Development Mega TechCenter.

“We have been eager to have this project start for over a year. This is the key that unlocks this whole site, all 1,400 acres of it. Over the next couple of years this could become the larger economic hub for not only Wilco, but Austin, Texas and the U. S. as a whole,” said Don Carlson, chair of the Hutto Economic Development Corp. board.

The Megasite is a project of the Hutto EDC working in conjunction with the city. The EDC owns much of the land, but the $16 million spine road was funded by city bonds and is being built by Jordan Foster Construction.

The street has been referred to as the east-west spine road since the design process started in 2022. Carlson announced that a name for the road has been submitted to the county for processing, and once it passes it will officially be known as Krueger Boulevard in honor of the family that previously farmed the Megasite land.

The enormity of the transformation of this site from farmland to industrial hub was noted by Williamson County Judge Bill Gravell.

“Where you’re standing is the epicenter of economic development growth not only in America, but in the world. There’s no manufacturing complex in the world that is larger that is currently under construction than where we stand,” the judge said. Gravell shared that his first job as a boy was in Hutto and the businesses to be located in the Megasite will further his commitment to creating local job opportunities.

“One thing that matters to me, and I want to make this clear from the very beginning, is that our future is based upon the kids that we’re generating through our local schools and the opportunity for those babies to come back and work locally,” he said.

The collaboration it took to get the Megasite rolling was also lauded.

“We get it done with partnership. When we’re all pointed in the same direction there’s a lot for us to get done,” said Russ Boles, Williamson County Commissioner Precinct 4.

Leaders from the county joined those from Hutto EDC, Hutto Independent School District, Temple College and the cities of Taylor and Hutto in attendance.

“When I first got on council there was a perceived issue between the city of Hutto and the city of Taylor, that one city was trying to get development from another city,” said Hutto Mayor Mike Snyder. “And, what I’ve seen with my eyes working with the people of Taylor and the Taylor people working with Hutto, it’s no longer just Taylor and just Hutto, it’s our whole area. Everything Hutto does benefits Taylor and everything Taylor does benefits Hutto.”

Cheney Gamboa, Hutto director of economic development, said Krueger Boulevard will be completed by late August.
