Candidate filing begins next week
HUTTO — Jan. 17 is the first day for city council and school district board candidates to file for a place on the May 4 general election ballot.
Hutto Independent School District board of trustees has two members whose seats are expiring, Amy English and James Matlock.
Seats for the general election for Hutto City Council are Place 2, currently held by Dan Thorton, and Place 5, currently held by Dana Willcott.
City council members and Hutto ISD board members are elected at large. This means each elected official represents the entire city or school district.
Candidates for city council can pick up and submit their filing packets at Hutto City Hall, 500 W. Live Oak St., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Candidates for Hutto ISD board of trustees should pick up and submit their applications at the Central Administration building located at 200 College Street. The office is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Fridays.
The last day to submit candidate forms is Feb. 16 by 5 p.m.
District welcomes new leaders
Hutto ISD recently introduced two new directors serving the district.
Cassandra Hulsey, LSSP, NCSP, came onboard as director of special education.
“The guiding principle throughout all of my work has been the relentless advocacy for children and public education,” Hulsey said. “I’m excited to join Hutto ISD and look forward to continuing that advocacy for our special education community.”
Her most recent previous position was as Special Education Coordinator at Belton ISD.
Keyawna Glaze joined the district as Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
“Keyawna brings a wealth of experience in creating inclusive environments and fostering diversity,” said a district spokesperson.
Glaze previously served at Hays CISD, where she oversaw the district’s volunteer programs and processes, and contributed to the development of effective diversity training modules for staff.
City seeking board volunteers
Hutto currently has openings on six of the boards and commissions that advise city council. These volunteer organizations help guide council’s decisions and provide input. Volunteers serve as their community’s voice.
“A very important component of our governmental entity here for the community is having citizens participate,” the city manager said. “Just pay attention to what your availability is whenever you are looking at a board or commission and make sure you can meet that commitment if selected.”
Boards and commissions with current openings are Building and Standards Commission, Diversity and Inclusion Commission, Ethics Review Commission, Library Advisory Board, TIRZ Board No. 2 and Zoning Board of Adjustments.
Applications can be filed on the city’s website, huttotx.gov/volunteer.
Free fishing day scheduled
One day a year, officials say, you’ll find a pond full of trout in Adam Orgain Park. That would be during the annual Hutto Trout Derby, Saturday, Feb. 3 from 9 a.m. to noon.
“Texas Parks and Wildlife will come and stock the Adam Orgain Park pond with trout and it is a free fishing day for all ages. So bring your kids out and let them have the excitement of catching the little trout,” said Earp. “My advice to you is to fish with dog food or something like that because that’s what they’re being fed.”
The city manager also said prizes will be awarded. Participants must supply their own rods and reels.
Registration is encouraged. Register at huttotx.gov/recreation.
Adam Orgain Park is located at 1001 County Road 137.
