HUTTO — The Hutto High School boys varsity basketball team under Head Coach Gant Caraway celebrated senior night Friday, Jan. 5 as the Hippos handled 6A-District 12 foe Copperas Cove High School with a 67-55 victory.
The Hippos got off to an 18-9 lead after the first quarter. The visiting Bulldawgs got to within a 28-22 deficit at halftime and Hutto was able to outscore Copperas Cove by three points in the third and fourth quarters to pull away down the stretch.
Hutto senior Zachary Hicks had yet another standout night to help lead this squad in a double-double effort with a team-high 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor, 13 rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Hippos junior Cylin Tate also had a solid all-around game with 16 points to go along with five rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots. Fellow junior Jacob Bell also scored in double figures for Hutto with 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Hutto senior Byron Piper had nine points in the win over Copperas Cove, while senior Jacques Calhoun added five points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals.
The Hippos (10-11 overall, 2-1 district record) are scheduled to have a district road game Jan. 9 at Bryan High School and will return home Friday at 7 p.m. to host rival Pflugerville Weiss High School.
