HUTTO — Eagle Mountain-Saginaw Independent School District announced Jan. 4 that Hutto High School varsity football assistant coach Ricklan Holmes would be the next head coach of the Fort Worth Chisholm Trail High School football program.
“I have truly enjoyed coaching this season, being a part of this family and embracing the Hippo Tradition,” Holmes said Thursday on X. “This season has been more of a blessing than you all can ever imagine. I have been accepted, appreciated and loved by Hippo Nation as though I’ve been here my whole life and because of you all, I feel like I have new life and energy to do what God has called me to do next.” Holmes, who spent the 2023 season with the Hippos under Head Coach Will Compton, was previously the head coach at his alma mater Tyler High School from 2012-22 and had a 79-51 overall record at the helm of the program. He led the Lions to the 5A-1 state semifinals in 2012 and 2014 and the regional semifinals in 2016 and 2018.
An all-state defensive back at Tyler, Holmes went on to play for Oklahoma State University and had a stint in the NFL with both the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots. He was then the defensive backs coach from 2007-11 at Tyler before taking over as the Lions’ head coach.
