HUTTO — Hutto High School varsity
football had two standout senior players commit to continue their careers as student-athletes as Hippos offensive lineman Preston Huneycutt and long snapper Tristan Compton made announcements. Huneycutt committed to play college football for the University of Texas at San Antonio, while Compton will compete at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
“As a coach, you love it when any of your players find a place to continue their education and dream of playing college football,” Hutto football Head Coach Will Compton said. “When it’s your own son, it’s even more special.”
Huneycutt, a 6A-District 12 first-team offensive line selection, was the Hippos’ reliable left tackle on a highscoring offense in 2023 led by senior star quarterback Will Hammond.
With UTSA Head Coach Jeff Traylor at the helm, Huneycutt will join an up-and-coming Roadrunners program that has recently found a lot of success in the American Athletic Conference.
“I want to thank my family and coaches for helping get me to this point in my life and helping me chase down my dream,” Huneycutt said Thursday on X.
Tristan Compton was also a first-team selection as a long snapper for the Hippos and will take his talents to UTRGV for a new Vaqueros program under Head Coach Travis Bush.
“I think Tristan’s work ethic is something that he brings to UTRGV that will serve him and the program well,” Will Compton said. “They will have their work cut out for them starting a program from scratch and he will need grinders like Tristan to start the program off the right way. Tristan loved everything about UTRGV when he went on his visit, loved the campus, the staff and community. I think it’s a perfect fit for him.”
In addition to being a standout long snapper, Tristan Compton also competed on the defensive line for Hutto as he finished the 2023 season with 18 tackles, two quarterback hurries and one sack for the playoffbound Hippos.
