Tigers thump Georgetown JV

CASEY GEORG Special to the Press

GEORGETOWN — Breken Proctor scored a season-high 31 points and the Thrall Tigers overcame a slow start to roll to a 76-42 win over the 5A Georgetown junior varsity squad on Tuesday night. The win runs the Tigers’ record to a perfect 13-0.

One of the trademarks of the Tigers this season has been their ability to start quickly. On Tuesday, Thrall struggled from the field in the opening period, managing just 13 points, but their swarming defense held the Eagles to just six points.

When their offense did get on track, late in the first quarter, it was overwhelming. The Eagles led 6-2 with 3:19 to play in the opening period, but over the next five minutes, the Tigers outscored the Eagles 18-0 to take a 20-6 lead with 6:20 to play in the second quarter. The Tigers went on to score 24 points in the second period and led the Eagles 37-14 at the half. Proctor scored 14 of his 31 points in the second period, including a trio of three-point shots.

As the second half got underway, the Tigers’ offense showed no signs of slowing down. Proctor tallied another eight points, including a perfect six for six from the free-throw line. Steven Walker and Dawson Meiske added five points each in the quarter, and the Tigers pushed their advantage to 59-28 entering the final period.

In the fourth quarter, Georgetown managed to put up 14 points, mostly late in the period against the Tigers’ bench. But, the Tigers also continued to score at a solid pace. Proctor finished off his night with a pair of three-pointers, while Darius Johnson came off the bench to score four, and Walker added three.

In addition to Proctor’s 31 points, Walker dropped in 15 points, while Meiske contributed 11 in the win.

The Tigers have already surpassed their best win total in at least the past 10 years, but show no signs of letting up. They hosted the Florence Buffaloes (1-8) on Friday and will begin district play on Tuesday when they travel to Granger (7-4).
