GRANGER — The Granger High School boys varsity basketball team opened its 2023-24 regular season on a bright note Tuesday, Nov. 28 as the Lions took care of business with a 39-27 victory at home against the Buffaloes of Florence High School.
In a defensive battle between both teams, Granger scored down the stretch when it mattered most as the Lions were finally able to pull away from Florence in the fourth quarter.
Granger was led by sophomore Caleb Tucker and his double- double effort on the night with a game-high 14 points and 12 rebounds, while senior Trae Herrera also scored in double figures in the win for the Lions with 10 points, four steals and two rebounds. The duo of Tucker and Herrera knocked down multiple three-pointers that helped keep the Lions ahead of the Buffaloes for the majority of the game.
The Lions also got a solid all-around game from sophomore Kael Jackson with five points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals against Florence.
With the first victory of the young season under its belt for Granger Head Coach Chaston Kubacak and his squad, the Lions will finish up at the Moody Tournament this weekend and then be back in action at home Dec. 5 as they host the Blue Jays of Snook High School.
