HUTTO — Hutto High School varsity football was well represented earlier this month as several Hippos players were selected to the 6A-District 12 All-District squad.

Highest honors for Hutto were senior standout quarterback Will Hammond being selected as the 6A-District 12 Overall Most Valuable Player, senior wide receiver Alex Green being named the Offensive Most Valuable Player and sophomore running back Keilan Chavies being honored as the Offensive Newcomer of the Year.

Hammond consistently put on a show for the Hutto offense during the 2023 season as the Texas Tech University commit threw for 3,910 yards through the air with 35 touchdowns while also rushing for 1094 yards and 19 scores on the ground. Green was Hammond’s favorite target all year as the senior wide receiver hauled in a teamhigh 101 receptions for 2,056 yards and 19 touchdowns. Chavies looked the part in his first season on varsity as he was a threat out of the backfield with 35 receptions for 638 yards and eight touchdown catches while also rushing for 520 yards and four rushing touchdowns.

Hutto had a pair of players named first-team alldistrict with Hippos senior offensive lineman Preston Huneycutt along with fellow senior Tristan Compton as long snapper. Secondteam all-district picks for Hutto were junior utility back Braeton Anderson, senior offensive guard Kaleb Hopson, senior linebacker Matthew Medrano, senior defensive end Braxton Phelps, senior safety Steven Galindo, sophomore linebacker Brayden Daniel and senior kicker Gabriel Sorto.

All-district honorable mention selections for the Hippos were senior defensive lineman Phillip Obiesie, senior wide receiver Carson LaPlante, senior defensive lineman Chris Smith and senior offensive lineman Juan Rodriguez.

The Hippos under Head Coach Will Compton started out the 2023 season with just a 1-5 record but won three straight district games to secure the final playoff spot as the No. 4 seed. Hutto finished 4-7 overall but should return a lot of key players in 2024 to continue to build this program for the future.
